EU backs tariffs on Russian, Belarusian fertilizers, agri imports

( May 22, 2025, 11:40 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The European Parliament today endorsed a proposal to impose new import tariffs on Russian and Belarusian fertilizers and agricultural products — including sugar, flour, vinegar and animal feed — with the goal of reducing the EU's dependency on these imports. Under the proposal, fertilizers from those two countries will be subject to a 6.5 percent tariff starting on July 1. Additionally, duties per metric ton will gradually increase, rising from 40 euros from July 1 this year, to 430 euros from July 1, 2028. The objective is to limit financial support for Russia's war in Ukraine and promote diversification in EU fertilizer production. The proposal includes safeguards to monitor market impacts and protect EU farmers. It now awaits final approval by the Council of the EU, which represents the bloc's governments.Statement follows....
