Kakao Mobility defeats self-preferencing allegations in appellate court ruling

By Jenny Lee ( May 22, 2025, 06:26 GMT | Insight) -- The Seoul High Court today ruled in favor of ride-hailing giant Kakao Mobility, nullifying all penalties previously issued by the Korea Fair Trade Commission, including a 27.1 billion won ($19.6 million today) fine and accompanying corrective orders. The regulator had accused Kakao Mobility of abusing its market dominance and engaging in unfair trade practices by favoring its affiliated taxi drivers — those using the company’s paid “Kakao T Blue” service — over unaffiliated drivers when dispatching ride requests.In a major legal victory, Kakao Mobility today successfully overturned a 2023 sanction decision imposed by South Korea’s antitrust watchdog in a case that challenged the company's algorithmic dispatch practices.  ...
