Google consent decree moves forward in South Korean YouTube Music bundling case

( May 22, 2025, 03:00 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Google has entered into a consent decree process with South Korea's competition regulator to address allegations the tech giant unfairly tied YouTube Music to YouTube Premium subscriptions. According to the Korea Fair Trade Commission, Google had been under investigation for only offering bundled YouTube Premium that includes videos and music, plus standalone YouTube Music services, while not providing a video-only option that could limit consumer choice and hinder fair competition in the online music-services market. As part of the proposed settlement, Google will launch a standalone YouTube video-subscription service equivalent to "YouTube Premium Lite" already available in nine other countries, and invest 30 billion won (about $21.8 million) to support South Korean consumers and the local music industry. The regulator will now gather feedback from interested parties and finalize the measures before presenting them to the commissioners for approval.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
