Swedish miner LKAB loses ETS permits court dispute against EU Commission

( May 22, 2025, 08:39 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag, a Swedish state-owned mining company, today lost its legal dispute at the EU Court of Justice against the European Commission over free CO2 emission permits for makers of sintered ore. LKAB — with the backing of the Swedish government — appealed to the top court to set aside the General Court’s previous judgment, which ruled in favor of the commission. The EU executive had refused to include LKAB’s sinter-producing facilities in a benchmark used to grant free carbon permits, as this would have given more free allowances than needed to cover its installations’ emissions. In today's ruling, EU judges dismissed LKAB’s appeal.Judgment attached. Case reference is C-621/23....
