UK government again defeated on AI and copyright, accused of big tech capture

By Frank Hersey ( May 20, 2025, 10:40 GMT | Insight) -- The upper legislative chamber defeated the government for a third time, as lawmakers amended the data reform bill to include further protections for the UK creative sector against their works being used for training AI models without notification, consent or compensation. Led by lawmaker Beeban Kidron, who pushed her latest amendment on transparency for data collection to a vote, the Lords won with a large margin but could see their changes once again removed when the bill returns to the executive chamber.AI companies and the creative industries will have to keep waiting to understand how their sectors may fare under the UK's Data (Use and Access) Bill as once again it was the battleground over how lawmakers see the future of copyright protections against the data being used for training AI models....
