SK Telecom breach probe reveals long-hidden malware, possible personal data leaks

By Wooyoung Lee ( May 19, 2025, 08:07 GMT | Insight) -- The recent hacking attack on SK Telecom, South Korea’s largest mobile carrier, can be traced back to malware planted on the company’s servers as early as June 2022 that had remained undetected for nearly three years, according to interim findings by a joint public-private investigation led by the Ministry of Science and ICT. The investigation found that two of the compromised servers temporarily stored users’ personal data, suggesting the possibility that users’ names, birthdates, phone numbers and email addresses, as well as international mobile equipment identity, or IMEI, numbers, could have been leaked.
