SK Telecom data breach exposes long-hidden malware, some 27 million IMSIs, probe finds

( May 19, 2025, 04:57 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Malware that compromised SK Telecom users’ data was first planted on the company’s servers in 2022 and remained undetected for nearly three years, according to interim findings released by South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT. The probe, which has been underway since April 19 when the breach was first detected, also found that some of the breached servers temporarily stored users’ personal information, raising the possibility that data such as names, birthdates, phone numbers and email addresses may have been leaked. Investigators confirmed that a total of 26,957,749 international mobile subscriber identities, or IMSIs, were compromised in the attack, with the size of USIM-related information affected estimated at 9.82 GB.
