South Korean webtoon, web novel providers ordered to fix unfair contract terms

( May 18, 2025, 03:00 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Ridi, Munpia, Millie's Library and 20 other companies involved in production, publishing, distribution and platform services in the webtoon and web novel sector have been ordered by South Korea's competition watchdog to amend over 1,100 unfair contract terms. The Korea Fair Trade Commission said its review identified 21 types of problematic clauses, including unauthorized claims to derivative works, restrictions on copyright, violations of moral rights such as attribution and integrity, excessive liability and unfair conditions for extending or terminating contracts. The latest enforcement follows a similar intervention in 2018 because creators continue to face unfavorable terms related to derivative rights, overseas distribution and settlement transparency. The regulator said the measures aim to safeguard creators' rights and promote fairer contracts in the country's rapidly expanding digital content industry.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
