China's Temu fined $992,000 for privacy violations in South Korea

( May 15, 2025, 05:50 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Chinese e-commerce giant Temu has been fined 1.3 billion won ($992,000) by South Korea’s privacy regulator for multiple violations of the country's privacy law. The Personal Information Protection Commission found that the company failed to inform users that their personal data was being handled in foreign operations and did not properly manage or supervise its data processors by neglecting to provide training on security measures. The company also made it difficult for users to terminate the service by requiring them to navigate a complex seven-step process. Temu is also accused of collecting unique identifiers such as resident registration numbers and facial videos for identity verification without a valid legal basis.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
