EU car industry asks ministers to preserve SEP regulation

( May 14, 2025, 14:40 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: ACEA, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, has urged EU ministers to oppose the European Commission’s plan to withdraw its proposal for a regulation on Standard Essential Patents. The association, whose members include BMW, Volkswagen and Ferrari, argues that the regulation is needed for securing fair and predictable access to wireless technologies such as 5G for connected, automated vehicles. The letter, signed by ACEA director-general Sigrid de Vries, warns that without legislation, carmakers remain vulnerable to exploitative licensing practices — often by non-European SEP holders — and legal uncertainty which blocks innovation. ACEA is calling on EU institutions to continue the legislative process, or else “the EU risks falling behind other world regions, such as China.”See letter attached....
