South Korea buys high-end supercomputer to keep up with global AI development race

( May 14, 2025, 03:54 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea has signed a contract to purchase a high-end supercomputer from Hewlett Packard Enterprise for 382.5 billion won ($270.2 million), according to the Ministry of Science and ICT. Powered by nearly 8,500 of the latest-model GPUs, the system will help address the shortage of computing resources for the country's AI researchers and developers. With a computing power of 600 petaflops, the machine will likely rank among the world's 10 most powerful supercomputers and is scheduled to be fully operational in the first half of 2026. South Korea recently introduced a supplementary budget that allocates an additional 1.91 trillion won to urgently acquire GPUs and other hardware to strengthen the nation's computing capacity.
