FIFA, Portuguese clubs can justify ‘narrow’ exceptions to EU competition law, court opinions say

( May 15, 2025, 08:11 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A Covid-era agreement between Portuguese football clubs restricting player transfers may not have breached EU competition law, given “its specific objective and limited scope, and the exceptional circumstances in which it was concluded,” according to a legal opinion for the EU's top court. Advocate General Nicholas Emiliou said that, without such circumstances, a no-poach deal between companies is generally a hardcore — and so unjustifiable — breach of EU antitrust law.
