Google, OpenAI, Microsoft among targets of KFTC market study on subscription services

( May 13, 2025, 02:54 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Google, OpenAI, Netflix and Microsoft are among the targets of a new five-week market study by the Korea Fair Trade Commission into subscription services. The KFTC has selected 37 services across sectors, including music and video streaming, e-books, generative artificial intelligence, cloud services, connected cars and shopping memberships. Targeted services include Netflix, Disney Plus, YouTube Premium, Spotify, ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft OneDrive, Office 365, Google Drive, iCloud, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Tesla and Coupang. The study aims to examine business practices across the subscription lifecycle — from signing-up and cancellation to customer support. The regulator will begin sending written inquiries on May 13 and aims to publish a policy report at the end of the year based on the companies’ response and expert analysis.
