Allstate hit with US suit alleging 'nonconsensual surveillance' in pricing insurance

( January 14, 2025, 22:49 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Allstate has been hit with claims that it violated wiretapping and other privacy law by illicitly using data from consumers smartphone apps to detail the driving behavior of over 45 million Americans to help determine what they should pay for insurance. "Defendants created the database for two main purposes: (1) to support Allstate Defendants’ car insurance business, including relative to under-writing and coverage decisions, and (2) profit from selling the driving behavior data to third parties, including other car insurance carriers (“Insurers”)," the plaintiffs said in the proposed class-action complaint.
