EU design law reform further expands scope of protection

By Nick Robertson ( May 1, 2025, 17:51 GMT | Insight) -- Design protection reforms implemented today in the European Union make it easier to obtain exclusive rights than in the US and China, a panel of practitioners said at the American Bar Association’s intellectual property section spring meeting today.  The bloc’s position as the jurisdiction with the broadest design-exclusivity protections is solidified by an expansion of eligibility for digital designs and promises for future reforms regarding video submissions.The European Union rolled out the first phase of reforms to design protections today, officially shifting away from “community designs” as part of a broader expansion of protection for intangible design assets....
