23andMe potential buyers must adhere to UK, Canada privacy laws, regulators say

( May 1, 2025, 14:35 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The data of 23andMe customers must be protected during the genealogy company's bankruptcy proceedings, British and Canadian data privacy authorities urged in a public statement today. In a joint letter sent to the US Trustee earlier this week, the UK Information Commissioner’s Office and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada stressed that potential buyers must adhere to the UK General Data Protection Regulation and to Canada's federal private-sector privacy law, known as Pipeda. The ICO and the OPC also welcomed the appointment of a Consumer Privacy Ombudsman to oversee data handling by a US bankruptcy judge last month.Statement follows. Full letter attached....
