Maxell, LG give notice of settlement in California patent row
( April 29, 2025, 18:18 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Maxell Ltd. and LG Electronics submitted a notice to US District Judge Noël Wise of the Northern District of California saying that a "prospective" settlement was reached on Maxell's allegations LG infringes nine patents covering a wide range of technology including recording media, imaging devices an information processing through its manufacture and sale of various smartphone, laptop, and tablet products. Their newly-struck agreement leaves unresolved claims by LG and its US affiliate co-defendant affiliate that a subset of those patents — Nos. 7,421,188, 10,199,072, 9,818,449, and 6,856,760 — are ineligible under Section 101 of the Patent Act as directed to the abstract idea of “recording, manipulating, and displaying data,” which they raised in an October 2024 motion for judgment as a matter of law. The issue was fully briefed but not yet ruled upon by Wise, who had scheduled a hearing for May 13. Relatedly, LG has not yet lodged a request to dismiss seven pending petitions for inter partes review by the Patent Trial and Appeal Board of Maxell’s US Patent Nos. 8,339,493, 8,736,729, and 10,244,284, along with the ‘449, ‘072, ‘760 and ‘188 patents. A bid by LG to stay the district court case while the parties awaited institution decisions by the PTAB was denied by Wise on April 25.See attached document....
