South Korea urges USIM protection after SK Telecom breach, no IMEI leak found

( April 29, 2025, 06:18 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: SK Telecom suffered a recent cyberattack but no leak of device identifiers occurred, South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT said today, following its initial investigation launched a week ago. The joint public-private investigation team confirmed that while subscriber phone numbers and international mobile subscriber identity numbers were compromised, users who enroll in SK Telecom's USIM Protection Service can prevent SIM swapping attacks using the leaked information. Authorities discovered four types of BPFDoor malware during their investigation, which exploits Linux's Berkeley Packet Filter and is difficult to detect. The ministry is urging SK Telecom to expand its reservation system and service channels for the USIM Protection Service while ensuring the company takes full responsibility from the moment customers apply for the service.The statement, in English, is attached....
