Florida, other states say US President must have authority to remove executive branch officials

( April 28, 2025, 21:19 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Florida, 20 other states, and the Arizona Legislature told a US judge today that because Rebecca Kelly Slaughter and Alvaro Bedoya are principal officers exercising substantial executive power on behalf of the US president, the Constitution requires that they be removable at the president’s will. They said that core separation-of-powers principles, bolstered by long historical understanding, require that the president have the authority to remove executive branch officials. “That limitation on Congress’s power indirectly preserves state sovereignty by ensuring that ‘independent agencies’ are politically accountable should they attempt to intrude in state affairs.” See attached file. ...
