More than 8.4 million flights departed from European airports in 2024, generating 187.6 megaton of CO2, with Ryanair, Lufthansa and British Airways the top polluters. Intercontinental flights generated the highest emissions, but these aren't currently priced under the EU, Swiss or UK carbon markets. T&E warns that this shows cracks in the aviation climate legislations, as airline CEOs call on the EU to weaken the rules for carbon pricing.
