Lawmakers’ amendments establish next step in UK AI copyright battle

By Frank Hersey ( April 28, 2025, 17:26 GMT | Insight) -- The battle over the future of the UK’s AI copyright regime is set to continue as lawmakers in the executive chamber attempt to reinstate protections around web crawlers and AI model training transparency — which were added to the data reform bill in the upper chamber but removed by the executive. A fresh attempt is also being sought by a lawmaker to deliver similar protections from a data transparency approach, and a further amendment reopens the argument on AI in education.Lawmakers have submitted for debate the reintroduction of an entire chapter of the Data (Use and Access) Bill that had sought to counter the potential outcome of any government attempts to alter the UK’s AI copyright regime. Originally added in the House of Lords, it was removed in the Commons. A further attempt to tackle similar concerns is being brought by a lawmaker of the governing party, while another amendment would bring in protections around the use of AI in education....
