Some remedies in Google US case could crater funding for web platforms, group says

( April 24, 2025, 16:49 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A paper from Open Web Advocacy says the US Department of Justice was "absolutely right" to bring and win its Internet search monopolization lawsuit against Google, and while most of the proposed remedies would either benefit or have a neutral effect on the broader web platform, two stand out as collectively "likely catastrophic." In the 128-page paper, the body argued against a total ban on search engine placement deals and forcing Google to divest Chrome. These remedies, it said, could cause a collapse in funding for the web platform. "We estimate that these remedies could trigger a 70% drop in web platform investment, undermining a system that supports trillions in annual economic value," the group said. "A total ban on search engine placement deals would likely bankrupt Mozilla and strip a newly independent Chrome of its most reliable revenue stream." Statement follows....
