DeepSeek urged to rectify South Korea privacy lapses over data transfers to China, US

( April 24, 2025, 03:00 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: DeepSeek has been issued corrective recommendations by South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission after an inspection in January. The PIPC said the Chinese AI firm transferred South Korean users’ data — including device, network, app information and AI prompt inputs — to four to five companies in China and the US, including ByteDance affiliate Beijing Volcano Engine Technology, without proper consent or an opt-out mechanism for AI training use. The regulator urged DeepSeek to ensure legal grounds for any future overseas data transfers, immediately delete previously transferred prompt inputs and enhance service transparency by publishing a Korean-language privacy policy. If DeepSeek accepts the recommendations within 10 days, they will be considered equivalent to a correction order under privacy law, with implementation results due within 60 days and the regulator planning at least two follow-up inspections.
