Consent rules, AI data transparency sharpened in South Korea privacy policy update

( April 21, 2025, 08:13 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s privacy regulator has revised its guidelines to reinforce data subject rights while reducing compliance burdens for businesses. The Personal Information Protection Commission said the updates clarify which data requires consent — such as sensitive information, unique IDs and third-party transfers — and what can be processed without it, including for member services and product support. Businesses can now group personal data by category when special circumstances make listing each item and retention period difficult, and disclose contact points for handling personal data complaints beyond just the chief privacy officer's department. Mobile apps are granted more flexibility in placing privacy policies to improve accessibility. The guidelines also require clear instructions on data rights, such as portability and automated decisions, while encouraging companies to disclose AI training data practices and provide clear methods for rejecting cookies and personalized advertising.The guidelines and PIPC statement, in Korean, are attached....
