London's Ritz Hotel partially loses EU trademark opposition, succeeds for tobacco services

( April 17, 2025, 08:55 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Ritz Hotel in London has lost a bid to block a trademark application for the word “ritz” across a wide range of goods and services in the EU, after failing to prove genuine use of its earlier marks outside the UK. The EU Intellectual Property Office rejected the opposition for all goods except tobacco-related retail services, where the Ritz Hotel’s “Ritz London Cigars” mark prevailed. As a result, Swiss wholesaler Ritz Enterprise may proceed with its EU trademark for most classes, including clothing and printed materials.See EUIPO document attached....
