Meta must prove Instagram, WhatsApp acquisitions enhanced competition, US FTC says

( April 10, 2025, 19:13 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Meta Platforms has the burden to establish that competition was enhanced because of the acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp in 2012 and 2014 respectively, the US Federal Trade Commission said in a brief ahead of an April 14 monopolization trial. "Meta cannot make this showing because, as detailed above, the evidence will show that the acquisitions were defensive responses by Meta to competitive threats. Meta opted to squelch Instagram and WhatsApp rather than trying to compete with them, and its conduct thus did not enhance competition," the FTC said in the pretrial brief filed with the US District Court for the District of Columbia.See attached document....
