Meador nomination for FTC seat should be rejected, Sen. Cantwell tells lawmakers

( April 10, 2025, 16:14 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: US Senator Maria Cantwell, a Washington Democrat and Ranking Member of the Senate's commerce committee, called on other lawmakers to reject US President Donald Trump's nominee for the third Republican Federal Trade Commissioner seat, Mark Meador, after the firing two Democrat commissioners without cause. In a statement, Cantwell said Trump's firings undermine the FTC’s independent history of protecting consumers from fraud, scams and anti-competitive practices, free from political influence. “Ninety years ago, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the law that affirmed that FTC Commissioners should be protected and removed only for cause. Since that ruling, the FTC has flourished as a consumer protection watchdog — independent of the influence of the President. Until now," Cantwell said.Statement follows...
