Japan taps chief negotiator to contain damage from US tariffs

By Sachiko Sakamaki ( April 8, 2025, 07:03 GMT | Insight) -- Economic and fiscal policy minister Ryosei Akazawa will be Japan's chief negotiator in talks with the US as Japan seeks to mitigate the impact of new US tariffs on its economy.  Akazawa's appointment follows a phone call yesterday between Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and US President Donald Trump, where both sides agreed to appoint negotiators. Tokyo hopes Akazawa's discussions with his US counterparts will lead to an easing, if not the elimination of the punitive tariffs, which are expected to significantly impact the Japanese economy.
