Netflix, Oceanic Preservation Society secure dismissal of US DMCA claims

By Melissa Ritti ( April 7, 2025, 14:57 GMT | Insight) -- A federal judge in California has rejected copyright claims against Netflix in connection with the inclusion of 17 seconds of audio-visual footage in the Oceanic Preservation Society’s docuseries “You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment.” In so ruling last week, US District Judge Andre Birotte Jr. disagreed with plaintiff Corin Smith that the display of Netflix’s “N” logo when programming on the streaming service is paused qualifies as false copyright management information under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The defendants, in moving to dismiss, accused the plaintiff of attempting to "weaponize" the statute against them.A videographer saw a subset of his copyright case against Netflix and the Oceanic Preservation Society, or OPS, dismissed last week....
