Japan 'strongly requests' exclusion from US reciprocal, auto tariffs, government says

( April 3, 2025, 04:47 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Japan has conveyed its "extreme regret" over the US's reciprocal and automobile tariffs, and has requested Japan's exclusion from the trade measures announced by the Trump administration Wednesday. Japan's government spokesman, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi, told reporters today at his regular press conference that Japan will continue to communicate with the US on all channels including "high levels." Hayashi declined to comment on whether Japan is considering countermeasures, or taking its case to the World Trade Organization. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has instructed his cabinet to monitor and respond as needed to the tariffs' impact on Japanese jobs and cash flow, Hayashi said.The press conference video link is available here....
