Blocking access to TikTok in New Caledonia wasn't legal, French court says

( April 2, 2025, 13:40 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The French government may temporarily suspend access to a social network, but in exceptional circumstances and under certain conditions, France's Council of State has said. Such a measure must fulfill three conditions, namely that it is indispensable to tackle serious events, that no other technical means allow the immediate implementation of alternative measures that have less of an impact on rights and freedoms, and that the block is limited to the period required for researching and implementing alternative measures. The Supreme Court thus ruled that the prime minister's decision to block access to TikTok in the French territory of New Caledonia in May 2024 didn't meet all of these conditions.
