Cigna must face US allegations of illegal AI use in denying medical claims

By Mike Swift ( March 31, 2025, 23:36 GMT | Insight) -- A US judge in California allowed key AI-related allegations against Cigna's algorithmic claims review system, PxDx, to proceed.  Plaintiffs say PxDx violated California's Unfair Competition Law in denying over 300,000 coverage requests during a two-month period in 2022, with doctors spending only 1.2 seconds per review. Similar cases against other insurers, like United Healthcare and Humana, are ongoing, challenging AI's role in medical coverage decisions.Cigna must defend allegations that the health insurer illegally allowed an autonomous algorithm to deny coverage to thousands of subscribers without proper physician oversight, although a federal judge narrowed allegations in the case....
