Japanese messaging app LINE told to improve data management following photo leak

( March 31, 2025, 04:56 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Japanese operator of the messaging app LINE has been recently instructed by the telecom regulator to improve its data-management practices, after many users reported seeing other people's thumbnail photos in the app's photo-sharing function, LINE Album. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, programming errors by LY Corp during the transition to a new image-processing system led to the display of thumbnail photos belonging to 130,000 users, including 70,000 from Japan, to other users. The regulator deemed this a violation of the Telecommunications Business Act, which safeguards the confidentiality of communications. In its administrative guidance, the ministry directed the tech company to implement rigorous measures to prevent a recurrence, and submit improvement reports.
