New Zealand considers 'demerger' of supermarkets to boost competition

( March 30, 2025, 00:58 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The New Zealand government is working with advisors to consider options including a possible “demerger” of existing entities to improve competition in the supermarket sector. In a statement today, New Zealand Finance Minister Nicola Willis said that the government is issuing a Request for Information asking potential supermarket challengers “what regulatory changes are needed to help them compete at a national scale and drive grocery prices down.” The statement added that the lack of competition in the grocery sector is a result of a “series of mergers that have occurred over the past 30 or 40 years.” In a speech today, Willis said that the government is seeking “detailed information” from potential investors about how the government can support a new competitor using the available legislative and regulatory tools. The full statement and the speech by New Zealand Minister for Finance and Economic Growth Nicola Willis follow:30 March 2025...
