Consumer bodies may pursue data breaches under unfair competition, says German court

( March 27, 2025, 09:18 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Consumer protection bodies have the right to pursue breaches of data protection rules by way of unfair competition lawsuits at civil courts, the German Federal Court of Justice said today. The court ruled that a violation by social network operator Meta of its duty, under the General Data Protection Regulation, to inform its users about the scope and purpose of the collection and use of their personal data justifies claims for injunctive relief under unfair competition provisions, and can be pursued by consumer protection bodies by way of actions at civil courts.Statement follows (in German)....
