South Korea's Woori Card fined for misusing merchant personal data for marketing

( March 27, 2025, 03:01 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Woori Card, a major South Korean credit card company, has been fined 13.5 billion won (about $9.2 million) by the privacy watchdog for misusing the personal data of more than 200,000 merchant owners, a significant portion of whom had not consented to marketing use. According to the Personal Information Protection Commission, the company's Incheon Sales Center accessed merchant information from its database and shared it with card recruiters for marketing purposes between 2022 and 2024. The regulator said the company failed to implement proper oversight measures, allowing staff to access millions of personal records monthly without monitoring.
