UK consults on making satellite calls available for regular smartphones

( March 25, 2025, 10:14 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Ofcom, the UK telecom regulator, is consulting on a proposal to enable standard smartphones to make satellite calls. The plans announced today would allow mobile networks and satellite operators to use mobile airwaves — known as radio spectrum — to connect customers via satellite connections. Ofcom is considering three potential approaches to this: implementing a license exemption; a variation to the current licenses, or a new licensing regime.
