European project to promote non-English AI models kicks off

( March 20, 2025, 12:32 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Seventeen EU countries are taking part in a project led by France, dubbed “Alliance for Language Technologies,” in a bid to develop multilingual large language models by creating a common European data infrastructure and language technologies. There is a need to address "the shortage of European language data needed to train large language models," and the intent is to create AI models that ensure cultural diversity and are not just based in English, the European Commission said.Full statement follows....
