Foreign e-commerce research bids sought by South Korean antitrust agency

( March 20, 2025, 06:04 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea's competition watchdog is soliciting bids for a research project to develop effective designation criteria and operational plans for domestic representatives of foreign e-commerce platforms, such as AliExpress and Temu. According to the Korea Fair Trade Commission, the project, set to run from April to August, aims to establish appropriate thresholds for sales volume and user numbers that would trigger the requirement for foreign businesses to designate local representatives in South Korea. It will also create comprehensive guidelines covering the entire system — from designation procedures to consumer protection responsibilities that domestic representatives must fulfill to monitoring systems for compliance. The initiative follows amendments to the e-commerce law currently being reviewed by the National Assembly, which would ensure foreign platforms have accountable local representatives.The public notice, in Korean, is attached....
