Hacking drives half of South Korean data breaches, public-sector cases double in 2024

( March 20, 2025, 05:14 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea's privacy watchdog reported 307 personal-data breaches in 2024, with hacking accounting for 56 percent of incidents, followed by operational errors at 30 percent and system errors at 7 percent. According to the Personal Information Protection Commission, hacking incidents increased compared to 2023, with unauthorized access to administrator pages, SQL injection, malicious codes and credential-stuffing attacks being the most common methods. Reports of breaches at public institutions more than doubled, while private-sector incidents decreased slightly from the previous year. The regulator highlighted the importance of prevention measures including implementing detection systems for credential stuffing, installing web-application firewalls and establishing better operational protocols for handling personal information.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
