EU to introduce ‘Buy European’ rule for clean steel in public procurement deals

By Joanna Sopinska ( March 19, 2025, 16:41 GMT | Insight) -- The EU will seek to increase demand for EU-made clean steel by introducing the "Buy European" requirement in public procurement contracts, European Commission Executive Vice President Stéphane Séjourné said today while unveiling the bloc's steel and metals action plan. The 19-page paper is a roadmap with a set of measures the EU is planning to implement in the coming months to address the most urgent challenges its metal industry is facing.  The EU will seek to increase demand for the EU-made clean steel by introducing the "Buy European" requirement in public procurement contracts, European Commission Executive Vice President Stéphane Séjourné said today. While unveiling the steel and metals action plan, Séjourné also said that the EU is planning to introduce a requirement to use recycled steel in certain products made in the bloc to limit scrap "leakage."...
