UK court won’t stay Huawei, MediaTek SEP row in favor of Chinese proceedings

By Melissa Ritti ( March 18, 2025, 15:12 GMT | Insight) -- In a lengthy ruling issued this morning, UK High Court Judge Thomas Leech rejected a request by Huawei for an administrative stay of MediaTek’s lawsuit there, while the chipset competitors litigate allegations of antitrust violations and patent infringement in China. He further rejected a request for an administrative stay in view of Huawei’s vow to take no action to enforce its standard essential patent portfolio against MediaTek in the UK on a subset of MediaTek's activities. In so ruling, Leech said the latter offer was too little, too late.Huawei can’t shake a lawsuit by MediaTek in the UK over its alleged infringement of three 4G and 5G standard essential patents, or SEPs, and MediaTek’s request for a global cross-license on fair, reasonable and nondiscriminatory, or Frand, terms....
