EU lawmakers defend audiovisual rules following US threats

( March 18, 2025, 08:42 GMT | Official Statement) -- Mlex Summary: A cross-party coalition of more than 50 Members of the European Parliament has sent a letter to Ursula von der Leyen, Henna Virkkunen and Glenn Micallef, asking the European Commission to defend the Audiovisual Media Services Directive. The lawmakers wrote in response to a recent memorandum from the Trump administration, which threatened trade reprisals against EU laws that target US tech companies. This memorandum mentioned the AVMSD — due to be reviewed in 2026 — which requires streaming services such as Netflix to also finance local productions.The letter is attached....
