Foreign firms found lagging in South Korea's first privacy policy evaluation

( March 17, 2025, 03:34 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Foreign companies scored lower than domestic firms across all categories in the South Korean privacy watchdog’s first evaluation of privacy policies, which assessed 49 companies across seven key sectors — including major tech firms such as Naver, Kakao, Google, and Meta Platforms — as well as e-commerce platforms, video streaming services and online travel agencies. The Personal Information Protection Commission flagged several issues, including discrepancies between stated policies and actual practices in 72 percent of companies, vague data retention terms used by more than half and 5 out of 10 foreign companies failing to provide proper privacy inquiry services through their legally required domestic representatives. The regulator said it will notify companies of the results to encourage improvements and plans to announce its 2025 evaluation framework, which will focus on AI and smart home technologies, in May.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
