California AG defends state deepfake election content laws

( March 7, 2025, 23:31 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: California Attorney General Rob Bonta moved for a summary judgment in a federal case challenging two artificial intelligence laws, AB 2839 and AB 2655, restricting the use of “deepfakes” in political campaigns, arguing the laws are not about silencing political critique or shutting down political debate. “Rather, it is an attempt to solve a difficult and novel issue that poses a growing threat to free and fair elections: intentionally altered digital content that portrays something that did not happen as if it did occur and that is meant to deceive and manipulate voters. While the First Amendment provides some protection for falsity, both the Supreme Court and the Ninth Circuit have long recognized that it does not protect all lies," Bonta said. See attached file. ...
