Grocery wholesale-supply sector faces review in New Zealand

( September 24, 2024, 05:08 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: To assess the need for additional regulation or action to improve competitiveness, New Zealand's competition regulator is scrutinizing the grocery retailers' acquisition markets. In a statement, the New Zealand Commerce Commission said that the first annual grocery report published recently revealed that the current wholesale regime, despite benefiting a small group of retailers, is unable to resolve critical issues within the wholesale market. In a preliminary issues paper, the regulator is seeking feedback on whether regulated grocery retailers, such as Woolworths New Zealand and Foodstuffs cooperatives, should be required to provide wholesale on non-discriminatory and specified access terms. The regulator will publish its report on June 30, 2025. The full statement by the New Zealand Commerce Commission follows; and the preliminary issues paper for the wholesale supply inquiry is attached:...
