Turkey price-fixing claim swap not barred by champerty, Carina tells US judge

( March 4, 2025, 23:35 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Sysco should be allowed to assign turkey price-fixing claims against US meatpackers to Burford Capital subsidiary Carina Ventures because the "ancient state law doctrine of champerty" is not recognized under federal common law, Carina told an Illinois federal judge. "Because champerty is a defunct doctrine with no basis in federal law, Sysco’s assignment to Carina is valid, and summary judgment should be denied," Carina said in a memo opposing a motion for summary judgment filed  in the Northern District of Illinois by Perdue Farms, Tyson Foods, Cargill and other turkey producers.See attached file....
