Tech giants, US Chamber, scholars weigh in on Snap case
( February 28, 2025, 19:17 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Indicating the high stakes for privacy law, litigation against Snap and Meta Platforms before the California Supreme Court about whether the companies are correctly interpreting the US Stored Communications Act has received a long list of amicus filings. A California appeals court decision, the US Chamber of Commerce said, "eliminates privacy protections long afforded by the Stored Communications Act (SCA) to online service providers and their billions of users. A group of defense attorneys, meanwhile, said the state appeals court got the decision correct but the interpretation of SCA protections could be more limited. "We think this case can be decided simply by finding the Stored Communications Act (SCA), does not impliedly create an unqualified evidentiary privilege for “electronic communication service” providers, including social media companies," the defense lawyers said.p.p1 (margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 13.0px 'Century Schoolbook'; color: #000000)
