Japan music copyright group to charge minimal usage fee for students after Supreme Court case

The Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers, or JASRAC, said it reached an agreement with a group representing music schools and educators to charge 750 yen ($5) per adult student and 100 yen per child student annually, with provisions for minimal-use cases. The agreement comes after a 2022 Supreme Court decision of a lawsuit filed against JASRAC by the music school group, prompted by JASRAC's previous charge of 2.5 percent of tuition.
