Independent retailers need level playing field in New Zealand electricity market: regulator

( February 27, 2025, 01:15 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: New Zealand’s major electricity generator-retailers Genesis Energy, Contact Energy, Meridian Energy and Mercury could soon be in trouble for giving preferential treatment to their retail arms in relation to electricity hedge contracts. In a statement accompanied by a consultation paper today, the New Zealand Commerce Commission said that its Energy Competition Task Force is proposing mandatory non-discrimination obligations to “level the playing field” between the four large generator-retailers and the independent participants in the electricity market to increase competition.
